Echinacea Essential Oil: Why One of the World's Most Famous Medicinal Plants Has Almost Never Been Distilled

Almost everyone has heard of echinacea.


For generations, its roots, leaves and flowers have been used in herbal medicine, particularly during the colder months of the year. Walk into almost any health food shop and you'll find echinacea tinctures, teas, capsules and extracts lining the shelves.


Yet until recently, almost nobody had experienced echinacea as an essential oil.

That isn't because people weren't interested. Quite the opposite. It's because echinacea has long been considered one of the most difficult medicinal plants to distil successfully.


Thanks to advances in cultivation and distillation, this has begun to change. In 2026, dōTERRA introduced what it describes as the world's first commercially available echinacea essential oil, opening the door to an entirely new way of experiencing this remarkable plant.


So why has it taken so long? And how does an essential oil differ from the herbal preparations that many people already know?

What is Echincea?

Meet the Plant

The name Echinacea refers to a small group of flowering plants native to the prairies of central and eastern North America. Belonging to the daisy family (Asteraceae), they are instantly recognisable by their raised, spiny central cone, which gives the genus its name. Derived from the Greek word echinos, meaning hedgehog or sea urchin, it is a nod to the prickly appearance of the flower head.


Three species are used most commonly in herbal medicine:

  • Echinacea purpurea

  • Echinacea angustifolia

  • Echinacea pallida


Although they look broadly similar, they differ slightly in appearance, chemistry and traditional use.


For centuries, Indigenous peoples of North America valued echinacea for a wide variety of purposes, long before it became popular in Europe and beyond. Modern herbal medicine has continued that tradition, making echinacea one of the world's most widely recognised medicinal herbs.

Why Has Echinacea Essential Oil Been So Difficult to Produce?


This is where the story becomes particularly fascinating.


Essential oils are produced by capturing the tiny volatile aromatic molecules that plants naturally release. Some plants, such as lavender and peppermint, are rich in these compounds, making steam distillation relatively straightforward.


But echinacea is different.


Much of the chemistry that has made echinacea one of the world's best-known medicinal herbs simply doesn't become part of an essential oil. Many of its most widely studied constituents - including water-soluble polysaccharides and numerous phenolic compounds, are non-volatile. Rather than travelling with the steam during distillation, they remain behind in the plant material and are captured far more effectively through tinctures, teas and other herbal extracts.


The plant presents another challenge too.


Compared with many familiar aromatic plants, echinacea produces only very small quantities of volatile oil. That means there is relatively little aromatic material available to collect, making steam distillation both technically demanding and, for many years, commercially impractical.


It isn't that echinacea lacked medicinal value. Quite the opposite. It simply became famous through preparations that preserve a different part of the plant's chemistry.


It was only after years of careful work that this began to change. Rather than inventing a new extraction method, dōTERRA invested in understanding the plant itself - working with growers to refine cultivation techniques, selecting suitable Echinacea purpurea plants, harvesting at precisely the right stage of growth and continually optimising the steam distillation process. The result is what the company describes as the world's first commercially available steam-distilled Echinacea purpurea essential oil.


The company hasn't revealed every detail of how this was achieved - and understandably so - but it's a wonderful reminder that producing an exceptional essential oil is about far more than simply putting a plant into a still. It requires deep botanical knowledge, skilled farming and an understanding of exactly how and when a plant is willing to share its aromatic essence.


To me, that's exactly the kind of innovation I'd expect from dōTERRA. One of the things I admire most about the company is its willingness to invest years into understanding a plant, not simply asking whether something can be distilled, but how it can be done exceptionally well.


What Makes Echinacea Essential Oil So Unique?


One of the most exciting things about dōTERRA's echinacea essential oil is that we can begin to understand it through its chemistry.


Independent GC/MS analysis shows that this is not a floral oil, nor does it resemble many of the bright, citrus-rich essential oils that people first encounter in aromatherapy. Instead, it is overwhelmingly composed of sesquiterpenes - a family of larger aromatic molecules often associated with woods, roots, resins and slow-growing plants.


The most abundant constituent is Germacrene D, representing more than 61% of the oil. This is extraordinary.


Although Germacrene D occurs naturally in many aromatic plants, it is unusual to see it dominating an essential oil to this extent. Alongside smaller amounts of β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, α-pinene, myrcene and α-phellandrene, it creates an aromatic profile that is earthy, green and quietly complex rather than overtly floral.


For aromatherapists, this chemistry immediately tells us something important.

Rather than expecting echinacea essential oil to behave like a herbal tincture, we can begin to appreciate it as a rare root essential oil with an exceptionally sesquiterpene-rich profile, offering a deeply earthy, grounding aroma that naturally lends itself to massage, meditation and restorative aromatic blends.


Does Echinacea Essential Oil Replace Echinacea Tincture?

Whenever a plant exists in several forms - tea, tincture, capsule, essential oil or extract, it's tempting to assume they're simply different strengths of the same thing. In reality, they're often remarkably different.


Steam distillation only captures the plant's volatile aromatic molecules: the tiny compounds that readily evaporate with steam. Everything else remains behind in the distillation vessel.


Many of echinacea's best-known herbal constituents - including its polysaccharides and numerous phenolic compounds - are not volatile. They don't evaporate with steam and therefore are largely absent from the finished essential oil.


This is why decades of research into echinacea tinctures cannot automatically be applied to echinacea essential oil. They're simply not the same preparation.


Rather than viewing one as a replacement for the other, it is perhaps more helpful to think of them as revealing different aspects of the same plant. A tincture captures much of echinacea's broader phytochemistry. An essential oil captures only its aromatic essence. Neither is necessarily superior - each tells a different part of the plant's story.


What Does Echinacea Essential Oil Smell Like?


If you've imagined something soft, sweet or floral because of echinacea's purple flowers, you may be surprised.


The aroma comes not from the petals, but from the volatile compounds released during steam distillation of the root. At first, it reveals earthy, green and woody notes, with a subtle freshness that reflects its naturally occurring pinenes and phellandrene. Beneath that, however, is an unexpected sweetness that gives the oil a warmth I wasn't expecting.


To my nose, that gentle sweetness even reminds me a little of Roman chamomile. They're chemically very different oils, but they share a similar balance of freshness, warmth and quiet comfort.


It isn't an obvious "pretty" essential oil in the way that lavender or rose might be, nor is it as dark or earthy as many other root oils. Instead, it feels complex. The more time I spend with it, the more it seems to reveal itself.


How Can You Use Echinacea Essential Oil?


One of the things I love most about this oil is that a plant the world has known for centuries as a herbal medicine is suddenly revealing itself through its aroma.


Rather than trying to recreate the experience of echinacea tinctures or herbal extracts, this essential oil invites us to appreciate a completely different expression of the same remarkable plant.


Because echinacea essential oil is such a recent addition to aromatherapy, there isn't yet a long history of traditional aromatic use to guide us. Instead, this feels like an opportunity to approach the oil with curiosity.


Before reaching for complex blends, spend a little time getting to know its aroma on its own. Notice how it evolves from the first impression, revealing layers of earthy, woody and green notes alongside an unexpected warmth and subtle sweetness. Like many of the most interesting essential oils, it doesn't reveal everything at once.


Once you've become familiar with its character, try introducing it into simple diffuser blends. It pairs beautifully with woods, resins, conifers and gentle florals, adding depth and quiet complexity without overpowering the other oils.

Beyond the Diffuser


Although diffusing is a wonderful way to experience echinacea's aroma, it isn't the only way to enjoy this unusual essential oil.


Its warm, earthy character also lends itself beautifully to massage blends, where it pairs particularly well with frankincense, copaiba, black pepper and lavender. A single drop added to a well-diluted massage oil brings depth and complexity, creating blends that feel both grounding and quietly comforting.

Rather than trying to make it fit the reputation of herbal echinacea, it's worth appreciating it for what it is: a unique aromatic expression of a plant many of us thought we already knew.


The Energetics of Echinacea

One of the things I love most about working with plants is that they can be appreciated through more than one lens.


We've spent much of this article exploring the chemistry of echinacea essential oil and why it differs from the herbal preparations many of us already know. But alongside the science sits another tradition that has shaped our relationship with medicinal plants for centuries: energetic herbalism.


Across many herbal traditions, roots have long been associated with grounding, resilience and nourishment. Hidden beneath the surface, they anchor the plant, store energy and provide stability through changing seasons. Those symbolic associations have influenced how many herbalists think about medicinal plants, including echinacea.


It's worth remembering, however, that the essential oil discussed here is distilled from the flowering aerial parts of Echinacea purpurea, rather than the medicinal root more commonly used in herbal practice. Energetic traditions were developed around the whole living plant and its herbal preparations, not specifically around its essential oil, which is a comparatively recent addition to aromatherapy.


For me, that distinction doesn't make these traditional perspectives any less meaningful. Rather than viewing them as claims about the chemistry of the essential oil, I enjoy seeing them as another way of reflecting on the character of the plant itself.


Interestingly, although echinacea is often associated with resilience and steadiness, some modern herbalists also describe it as a heart-centred plant. Rather than encouraging us to close ourselves off or retreat from the world, it seems to invite healthy boundaries while remaining open, compassionate and connected.


What Does the Research Tell Us?


Because commercially available echinacea essential oil is so new, research specifically investigating its aromatic use is still in its infancy.


That's not unusual. Every essential oil has to begin somewhere, and our understanding grows over time as researchers, aromatherapists and growers continue to explore it.


For now, it's important to distinguish between the evidence surrounding echinacea as a medicinal herb and the evidence relating specifically to its essential oil. Although both come from the same plant, they contain very different groups of compounds, meaning we can't assume that research on tinctures or extracts automatically applies to the essential oil.


Rather than seeing that as a limitation, I think it's an invitation to remain curious. We're only just beginning to understand where this remarkable new essential oil may find its place within modern aromatherapy.


A New Chapter for an Ancient Plant


There are very few opportunities in aromatherapy to meet a new essential oil.


Echinacea reminds us that even the plants we've known for generations can still surprise us. While it will no doubt continue to be best known as a treasured medicinal herb, its essential oil offers us the chance to experience an entirely different side of the same remarkable plant.
