Beyond Sleep: Exploring the Science Behind One of the World's Most Studied Essential Oils

For many people, lavender is still thought of as "the sleep one." It's the essential oil that appears in pillow sprays, bedtime routines and relaxing bath products.
But spend a little time exploring the scientific literature and a very different picture begins to emerge.
Over the past few decades, researchers have investigated lavender in hospitals, dental clinics, maternity units, care homes and laboratories around the world.
They've looked at everything from anxiety and pain to heart rate, blood pressure and even electrical activity within the brain.
How Scientists Study Lavender...
Lavender research doesn't all look the same. Some studies involve volunteers in hospitals or clinics, measuring things like anxiety scores, heart rate or sleep quality. Others take place in laboratories, where researchers investigate how individual constituents interact with bacteria, inflammation, skin cells or receptors within the nervous system. Together, these different approaches help build a much richer picture of one of the world's most studied essential oils.
As a doctor, reviewing research is an aspect of this work I find really fascinating but I know it can feel heavy, overwhelming and sometimes just outright boring. Rather than getting lost in individual papers, I'd like to take a step back and explore the bigger picture. Over the past few decades, researchers have investigated lavender across a remarkable range of settings and body systems. Together, these studies tell a fascinating story about one of the world's most researched essential oils.
Before we explore what the research says about lavender, it's worth taking a moment to think about how we read research in the first place. Understanding where a study fits within the wider body of evidence can completely change the way we interpret its findings.
Reading Research with Confidence
One of the questions I'm asked surprisingly often is, "How do I know whether the evidence is good?"
The truth is, I don't go looking for one perfect study. Science doesn't really works like that. Instead, I look at the body of evidence as a whole. As different researchers, in different countries and using different approaches begin asking similar questions and finding similar results, my confidence gradually grows.
The illustration below shows the traditional hierarchy of evidence. In general, studies higher up the ladder give us greater confidence when asking whether an intervention works. However, that doesn't make the studies lower down unimportant. Laboratory research, observational studies and clinical experience all answer different questions and contribute valuable pieces to the bigger picture.

Perhaps the most important thing I've learnt over the years is this:
It's rare for a single study to change our understanding overnight. Confidence grows when different types of evidence begin telling the same story.
The Nervous System
If there's one area where lavender has attracted the greatest amount of scientific attention, it's the nervous system.
Researchers have explored its effects on stress, anxiety, mood, sleep quality, attention, cortisol, heart rate variability and even brainwave activity measured using electroencephalography (EEG). Taken together, these studies suggest lavender appears to influence not only how calm people report feeling, but also several measurable physiological markers associated with the body's response to stress.
Clinical trials have repeatedly demonstrated improvements in validated anxiety questionnaires, while EEG studies suggest lavender may influence patterns of brain activity associated with relaxation and focused attention.
How This Changed the Way I Use Lavender...Before I began exploring the research, I thought of lavender mainly as something people reached for before bed. Now I think about it much more broadly. These studies have encouraged me to see lavender less as "the sleep oil" and more as a companion for the nervous system throughout the day. It's just as likely to appear in my diffuser while I'm writing, before a difficult conversation or after an especially busy afternoon as it is beside my bed in the evening. That shift has probably changed the way I use lavender more than anything else. |
The Cardiovascular System
One of the body's earliest responses to stress is often a faster heart rate and a rise in blood pressure.
Several clinical studies have reported modest reductions in both heart rate and blood pressure following lavender inhalation in stressful situations. Other researchers have observed lower cortisol levels, the body's primary stress hormone, in patients awaiting surgery.
None of this means lavender treats cardiovascular disease, but it does suggest something rather interesting: our sense of smell may influence the way our bodies respond to stress.
One of the things that struck me most was how closely our emotional and physical responses to stress are intertwined...One of the things I found most fascinating was seeing measurable physiological changes alongside people's experiences of feeling calmer. As doctors we're taught to separate the physical from the emotional, yet the cardiovascular research is a wonderful reminder that our bodies don't make that distinction quite so neatly. Stress is something we feel emotionally, but it's also reflected in our heart rate, breathing and blood pressure. It reminds me that creating moments of calm isn't an indulgence. It's part of caring for the whole person. |
Pain and Comfort
Pain is far more complex than many of us realise. Our emotional state, surroundings and expectations all influence the way pain is experienced, which is one reason researchers have become interested in aromatherapy alongside conventional care.
Lavender has been investigated during labour, after surgery, during dressing changes and for migraine. While results vary between studies, a growing body of evidence suggests it may help improve comfort and reduce the intensity of pain experienced by some people when used alongside standard medical care.
One thing the pain research reminded me of...Reading the pain research reinforced something I had already come to believe during my years working as a doctor: comfort matters. In busy hospitals, it's all too easy for our attention to become focused on observations, medications, investigations and procedures. Those things are, of course, enormously important. But alongside them sits something quieter that has always mattered just as much to me. A pillow adjusted behind someone's shoulders. A hand held during a frightening procedure. A calm voice. A familiar face. A peaceful room. The feeling that someone is caring not only for your illness, but for you. We know that pain isn't simply a message travelling from injured tissue to the brain. It's shaped by anxiety, expectation, previous experiences, our surroundings and whether we feel safe. In other words, the environment around us influences not only how supported we feel, but often how we experience discomfort itself. That's why I find the lavender research so interesting. Not because I believe fragrance replaces appropriate pain relief, it doesn't, but because it reminds us that creating an environment of comfort is part of caring. Aroma, touch, reassurance and kindness may seem like small things, yet together they help create the conditions in which people often feel more settled, more supported and better able to cope with difficult moments. I sometimes wonder whether we've underestimated those quieter aspects of care for far too long. |
Skin
Lavender has a long history of traditional use in skincare, and modern research continues to explore why.
Laboratory studies have investigated antimicrobial activity, inflammation and wound healing, while clinical studies continue to examine its potential role in supporting healthy skin. Although much of this research is still developing, it's one of the reasons lavender remains such a popular ingredient in balms, body oils and everyday botanical skincare.
This is probably the area where the research most closely reflects what happens in my own home...Lavender rarely works alone. Instead, it constantly appears alongside calendula, plantain, rosehip seed oil, beeswax and other botanical ingredients in preparations that have become everyday favourites. The evidence has given me greater confidence in continuing to include it, but if I'm honest, this is one of those areas where years of traditional use had already earned my trust. |
Brain Activity
Perhaps the most surprising research of all involves the brain itself.
Using electroencephalography (EEG), researchers have demonstrated changes in brainwave patterns following lavender inhalation. While we're still learning exactly what these changes mean, they suggest lavender's influence extends beyond simply creating a pleasant aroma.
For me, this is one of the most exciting areas of research because it reminds us that aroma isn't just something we experience emotionally. It is processed by the brain in remarkably complex ways.
I wasn't expecting to find researchers measuring brainwaves...The EEG studies completely changed the way I think about aroma. I knew about the limbic connection but I still think it's easy to dismiss scent as something that's merely pleasant (or unpleasant!). Yet our sense of smell has a direct and remarkably intimate relationship with the brain. The more I learnt about that connection, the less surprising aromatherapy began to feel. Instead, I found myself wondering why we ever underestimated the power of scent in the first place. |
What about in the lab?

Not all lavender research takes place in hospitals or involves volunteers.
Much of what we know about lavender comes from laboratory studies, where researchers ask very different questions. Rather than investigating whether lavender helps people feel calmer or sleep better, they're trying to understand what happens at a cellular and molecular level.
Scientists have explored how lavender essential oil and its major constituents interact with bacteria and fungi, how they influence inflammatory signalling, whether they help protect cells from oxidative stress, and how they may affect the behaviour of skin cells involved in wound repair. Others have investigated how compounds such as linalool interact with receptors in the nervous system, helping to explain some of the physiological changes seen in clinical studies.
Laboratory research can't tell us whether a treatment works in everyday life, but it can tell us something equally important: how it might work. Together with clinical research, it helps build a much richer understanding of this remarkably complex plant.
Why it's fascinating...Some of the most exciting lavender research isn't asking "Does it work?" It's asking "Which molecules are responsible, what are they doing, and why?" I think there's something rather wonderful about that. The more closely scientists examine lavender, the more complexity they continue to uncover within a plant many of us simply recognise by its familiar scent. |
So… What Should We Take From All of This?
As a doctor, I don't think one positive study ever proves very much. Science rarely works like that.
What interests me with lavender is the consistency. Researchers working in different countries, studying different groups of people and exploring different questions have repeatedly found evidence that lavender appears to influence both the way we feel and, in certain situations, measurable aspects of our physiology.
Does that mean every traditional use has been proven? Of course not. But it does remind us to stay curious. For centuries, people observed that lavender seemed to calm, comfort and soothe. Modern science isn't rewriting that story, it is gradually helping us understand why.
Perhaps that's one of the reasons lavender has endured for so long. It has never relied on dramatic claims or fleeting trends. Instead, it has thoroughly but quietly earned its place in homes, gardens and medicine cabinets for generations, and modern research is only beginning to reveal the remarkable complexity behind such a familiar plant.
