Every summer, I find myself hoping for the same thing.

Not that we fill every day with exciting plans, but that we spend a little more time outside together. A little more time noticing what’s growing around us. A little more time making, exploring and following our curiosity.

That’s what inspired me to create The Summer Apothecary Challenge - a free collection of 25 gentle, nature-inspired activities for curious children and the grown-ups alongside them.

Inside you’ll find simple botanical crafts, tiny gardening projects, scent adventures, nature challenges and seasonal recipes, all designed to encourage hands-on time together and a deeper connection with the natural world.

If it helps swap the occasional hour of screen time for an hour spent making, growing, exploring or simply noticing what’s outside the back door, I’ll be delighted.

Lavender is not a sleep oil.

I know… It might be one of the most famous essential oils for bedtime, but I think describing lavender this way dramatically underestimates it.

A better way to think about lavender is as an essential oil that appears to influence the nervous system and the way the body responds to stress.

And once you look at the research through that lens, something rather interesting happens.

Researchers aren’t only measuring sleep.

They’re measuring heart rate. Blood pressure. Cortisol. Brain activity. Pain perception. Validated anxiety scores.
And across very different clinical settings, lavender keeps appearing.

This isn’t because it simply makes people sleepy, but that its aromatic chemistry - particularly constituents such as linalool and linalyl acetate - appears to interact with several physiological pathways involved in arousal, stress and sensory processing.

Better sleep may simply be one expression of that.

🌿 This is the way I’d love you to start thinking about lavender.

Understanding the why behind essential oils matters.

Because when you understand how an essential oil appears to work, you stop reducing extraordinary plants to a single headline like “the sleep oil.”

If you’re still wondering what to get the teachers before the end of term… I’ve got you. 😂🌿

One of my favourite things about building a home apothecary is being able to make gifts like these. 🌿

My son’s teachers have cared for, encouraged and supported him all year, so for their end-of-year gifts I wanted to make them a few little things to encourage them to put their feet up and take a moment for themselves.

Quite literally, in the case of the foot bath melts. 😂

So I spent an afternoon in my kitchen making rosemary, peppermint and tea tree foot bath melts, a pink Himalayan salt body and foot polish, and little lavender and geranium lip balms.

Nothing enormously complicated and I think that’s rather the point.

For me, building a home apothecary isn’t about having shelves filled with hundreds of obscure remedies. It’s about slowly gathering useful ingredients and learning enough about them that, when you want to soothe a bite, make a balm, blend a bath oil or create a thoughtful gift for someone you love, you know where to begin.

Your collection of little bottles and jars starts to become genuinely useful. And, that’s the bit I absolutely love. 🌿

You’ve probably been underestimating lavender. 💜

And honestly, I don’t blame you.

Somewhere between purple fabric softener, synthetic pillow sprays and being repeatedly told it’s “the sleep oil”, we’ve managed to make one of aromatherapy’s most versatile essential oils seem rather… ordinary.

Perhaps that’s lavender’s problem.

It’s so familiar that we’ve stopped being curious about it.

For me, genuine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of those rare essential oils that earns its place in every single home apothecary. No it’s not a cure-all, but there are so many thoughtful ways to use it beyond simply reaching for it at bedtime.

And honestly? Understanding one beautifully versatile oil well is often far more useful than owning twenty bottles you barely know how to use.

Leave it to infuse slowly, and by Christmas you’ll have something beautifully rich to enjoy.

One of the things I love most about vanilla is that nothing about it can be rushed. The orchid takes years to flower and then does so for just a single day. The pods take months to mature. They’re then carefully cured before spending months more infusing in a bottle.

These beautiful Madagascan vanilla pods my parents brought home have inspired all sorts of little home apothecary projects. Alongside vanilla extract, I’ve also started a vanilla-infused oil, and I can’t wait to share both with you over the coming months.
